I have practiced Osteopathy and medicine in Northern California for over 20 years. I integrate traditional Osteopathic principles and manipulative medicine with the best of western, or allopathic, medicine. My goal is to practically apply Osteopathic principles by blending the material and nonmaterial aspects of clinical Osteopathy into a holistic approach to health care.
After graduating from Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois in 1978 with a Bachelors of Arts in Biology I earned my Masters of Science, in 1981, in Physiology at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. I performed basic science research in muscle physiology, completed and defended my thesis, and published the results of my research in the journal Diabetes in 1982
I attended the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Des Moines, Iowa and graduated in 1985. I then completed a one-year Osteopathic internship at Heights General Hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Following internship I was accepted to an allopathic Family Medicine residency at the University of Nevada School of Medicine in Reno, Nevada and completed this postgraduate training in 1988.
After residency, I became Board Certified in Family Medicine and later earned a Fellowship in the American Academy of Family Physicians. Following residency, I worked as a Family Physician in Watsonville, California and practiced the full spectrum of primary care medicine including newborn care, pediatrics, and adult medicine. I practiced both ambulatory care and hospital-based medicine.
In 1992 I took over the office of a retiring Osteopath and physician named Fritz Smith, MD and stopped practicing community based Family Medicine. Since 1992 I have had a specialty practice in Osteopathy, utilizing Osteopathic Manipulation with all patients. I see newborns, children, adolescents, and adults in a general Osteopathic practice that joins Osteopathy with the finest aspects of western medical care.
In 1994, I became Board Certified in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine through the American Academy of Osteopathy.
I am profoundly interested in the original teachings of Andrew Taylor Still (the founder of Osteopathy) and incorporate Dr. Still’s core principles into my work as an Osteopath. I write extensively on the topics of Osteopathic history, philosophy, and my personal experiences of practicing Osteopathy. I teach Osteopathy throughout North America and Europe, integrating Osteopathic clinical philosophy with perceptual training to help advance our understanding of the art and science of Osteopathy.
I practice near San Francisco, California with my wife Bonnie Gintis, DO. We work closely to offer a comprehensive, family based approach to health care that is dedicated to individualized care of complex medical problems.
